Another useless thing on a BMW is the indicator stalk - never appears to be used, although they do use the hazard warning light switch. This provides legal immunity for any parking restictions, and is clearly very useful for the BMW ubermensch.

Good! I like miles!

Thing is, it's not like a Govt directive to change to kilometres, it's more of a media thing with documentaries, some news programmes etc insisting on using kms. Grrrrrrr!

The worrying thing is, remember when petrol was sold in gallons only!

It's only a matter of time before miles / gallons / and other imperial measures are gone!

I guess a lot have gone already (isn't food sold in metric with imperial gone the way of the Dodo?). Also metres work quite well as they are roughly equivalent to yards. If I'm doing DIY I'm quite happy to work in feet/inches and centimetres all at the same time!

But miles..... Sorry, leave them alone media, my brain cannot compute kms!

The Swedes used to use english weights and measures or at least the names during the 19th century. They all disappeared of course in the 30s or so. One has stuck though. They think that kms are a bit -small- so they divide by 10 and call the result miles. For ex. it´s 200 kms from us to Stockholm but a swede wouldn´t say -200 km-. They would say 20 mil...

The most pointless feature ever is probably a Key for a TVR. The chances of it working long enough to need a key is extremely remote.

Default Audi A6 glove box button

Since no one seemed to have answered the original poster's question, here is the answer to it: the idea behind operating the glove box by a button (located higher up and closer to the driver) was

a) to allow easier access for the driver to open the glove box without having to lean over as much and

b) - even more importantly - the easy inclusion of the glove box into the "valet setting", where the special valet key does not allow to open the glove box. This is ensured without the driver having to think about it when dropping off the car at a dealer or indeed a valet, and it also prevents the driver from finding his glove box locked on the go because he or she had forgotten to unlock it.

There you go.
