Default Brake service

I have taken my 75 in to a well known national car service centre. They have told me that all four brake discs should be changed. The front ones have a ridge on the edge, not excessive, and the rear ones are pitted. The pads are worn all round. The garage maintain that every time brake pads are change the discs should be changed. This is e new one on me and I do not accept that this is the case. Any veiws on this. Am I right in thinking taat conditionn of brake discs has been removed from m.o.t. testing due to excessive failing by garages ?

Sounds like a nice little earner for your garage

The discs have a minimum thickness stamped on them, as long as you are within tolerances you are fine.

The only time they need changing is if they are thinner than the minimum recommended by the manufacturer or are damaged.

if you are changing the pads and discs are more then half worn or there abouts, I'd change them at the same time. Saves messing about again at a later stage.
You don't as others have already said, have to change the discs every time you change the pads.

if you change them at different times you may have to bed them in twice.

A lot of garages started doing this a few years ago as a ''nice earner''.

A lot of people worry about there cars and it only take a doubt that there is something wrong with there brakes for a lot of people will happily spend more than they need to.

HI Roger.
The well know national car service centre are trying to have you over if the discs are within the specified tolerance, & are not warped stay well clear, if the pads need changing do them your self if you are fit & able to.

Could you not add a photo of said discs & pads for us to view.

I agree with Arctic. I've had similar advice from Quick Fit when I was away from home (and tools) and needed some emergency work done. In reality, I seem to get through 2 or 3 sets of pads before the discs need changing, usually due to scoring rather than wear limits.

Totally agree with this, I'm on my 3rd set of pads with the same discs and my car passed it's m.o.t this afternoon. So as said it's just a money maker. Lee.
