Yes, it's called sodium dioctylsulphosuccinate. It causes any moisture on a surface sprayed with WD40 to coalesce into globules and run off.
Don't ask.

Not that you wanted to know this, but… it’s all about refractive indices. If you have a big bottle full of ground glass dust, you can’t see through it – looks like it’s full of white powder. Which it is. Kind of. But fill it up with water mixed with the ground glass, and it becomes transparent.

Same thing happens with many “faded” surfaces (eg car paint, cheap nasty headlight lens plastic etc), whose surfaces have actually gone from being smooth to microscopically rough. Something like WD40 fills all the minute gaps, and restores a smooth, transparent, shiny surface… very temporarily, ie till the first time you wash it.

I’ve often wondered if there’s a suitable lacquer which could be applied to our headlights as an alternative to sanding and polishing them every 5 minutes…?

WD 40 got the oil deposits off our new carpet the other month after I'd been messing about with the engine and unwittingly tramped the debris through the house.

The wife was placated after seeing the results of my frantic, try anything, clean up following the failure of the old standard...... 'no idea how that got there'..... defence from myself, although it is fair to say that there was a strong whiff of WD40 hanging around for a day or two.

There's a sacrificial laquer applied when the headlamps are made. This is a urethane type of film containg a UV absorber to protect the lens, because polycarbonate degrades quite quickly in sunlight. The faded/yellow surface that we abrade off is primarily the laquer and maybe part of the lens itself. You could reapply the proper gloop after grinding and polishing, but few people do at £40 a go. So, we keep regrinding every couple of years. Eventually there's nothing left to grind I guess.

This all day long.

Don't get WD close to rubber it absolutely kills the compound.

Thanks TC - that's interesting. Trouble is, I ground mine nice and clear, but it took less than a year for them to get back to blurry again.

Then I saw a nice set of crystal clear lamps for sale (not here), and bought them - it only took them 3 weeks to mist over completely, so I guess they had some sort of temporary coating to make them saleable. Hard to prove, though.

Maybe I'll just rub some WD40 in every morning
