Default Bonnet Open Warning

A few weeks back I was getting this warning regularly, as I was driving along. Thought I'd fixed it.... New bonnet switch, checked wiring - (nothing apparent), wound down the stops.

Now I'm getting it again!!

Any ideas, please?

Moderators - Can you please change this heading to : Bonnet Open Warning) (Cannot change or delete to start again. Thanks

Have you got the message centre or the standard instrument cluster as the bonnet open light is same light for doors too etc on standard cluster. Failing that and it is the bonnet open warning on message centre then maybe try adjusting the rubber blocks and the catches themselves so it shuts a bit tighter?

Sometimes, the clearance between the switch button and the bonnet panel is too large to adjust by the rubber buffers. You sink the bonnet lower than the wing edge, so it looks wrong. The easiest way to take up the slack is to reduce the gap by sticking a spacer on the bonnet panel where the button touches. I found those self-adhesive cork rings (Wilkinsons) are just the ticket. Mine needed two to eliminate the false alarms.

Hi T-Cut,
Never had the problem until the last couple of months....... I've got some "rubber feet" that should do the trick, so will also give those a go...... How thick were your spacers? Do not want to damage a new switch.....

BTW, T-Cut, from what I've seen of your posts today, you must be a serious candidate for Repetitive Strain Syndrome..... There should be a word per day count as well as post count on this forum... Thanks for all your really useful contributions, as indeed to Phil and all the others... Dammit - just typed myself into a corner and I do have RSI!!!

Like flat washers, less than an eighth inch thick.

So a quarter of an inch (as you needed two)?

Does that include the depth of the glue? Or am I being pedantic?

Or would the catch adjustment as indicated by Phil be the answer (or part thereof)?

They were less than an eighth inch. They are soft, so compress slightly to avoid damaging anything. I suppose they take up less than an eighth inch in service.

They had a peel-off backing so the gloo thickness is nebligible. If you stick something on yourself, don't use more than a tube-full.

I find adjusting the catches a bit tedious to be honest. It's a bigger job than sticking the spacers on. Also, it doesn't always do what you expect and getting them wrong spoils the fit of the bonnet. You can also over-strain the release mechanism if it's overdone. Cheaper than a tube of gloo tho'

Thanks T-Cut, the second question was meant in humour But all taken on board.

No error messages today.... I'm beginning to suspect that the ambient temperature has something to do with the problem, 4.5 degrees today (max) this morning was 1.5 degrees

Ever since the temp has remained above 6 degrees C, my bonnet warning light has not come on, (Mod. done with a little rubber foot on top of the new switch!!)
