Do you need to remove the whole bumper or just the grill to replace the series resistor on the pre-facelift ?

Just the grill. Then you can either work through the fanblades (not easy) or disconnect the fan from the motor (it's a bayonet style fit) and it will be ablle to drop just clear enough to make the job easy. Don't forget to disconnect the battery, the wires to the fan are permanent live!

Can one disconnect FL4, rather than disconnecting the battery ?

Yes, the 80amp link is the one, which I believe is FL4 in the under bonnet fuesebox.

Is there a circuit diagram of the fan & relays for the 2 speed diesel fan ?
I'm somewhat interested in fitting a PWM speed controller, now that 110A MOSFETs are 10/£1.30 !!!!
Anybody prepared to discuss this ?

I'm afraid not Mark. There's no official circuit diagram for any 2 speed fan with resistor.

Your diesel is already factory-fitted with a PWM controller!

Those will probably last not quite as long as an OEM resistor!
