It's a real shame about Maplins - the last of our major electronic component stores. I remember when it had just two stores, one of which was in Hammersmith. I used to go in there regularly whilst at uni in London.

The problem is that these days most people buy cheap & nasty electronic components, switches etc. directly from China on the bay and the traditional suppliers just cannot compete.

Anyone remember Henrys and Laskys on Edgware Road?

Haven't been in a Maplins for years because here in Derby we have R.F. Potts.

A proper old style store with just about everything. The type of place where you ask them for a widget with a wibble fitting and rated at 8.5W. They have to think for a minute, say they'll have a look upstairs and upon returning say...

'How many do you want?'

Yes, remember Laskys well, bought my first hi-fi from there, all separates, in probably c.1975 a veritable Aladdin's cave, took it all home in massive boxes on the train, well, I was young and the trains weren't as crowded as they are now.

Edgeware Road used to have several small electronic stores too, selling loads of used electrical bits such as early computer boards full of OC 71 transistors.

You could spend nearly the whole day just rummaging about.

The website is still up https://www.maplin.co.uk
Last year I splashed out on a CCTV system through Maplins. The installation was carried out by a sub-contractor. It works a treat and I can monitor everything from Nairobi, through an app on the phone....... but what a sad and a difficult time for the staff and the suppliers.

Why are these companies going under?
