Default Run flat tyres and the mot law

Hi all and hope your well..
A good friend of mine is selling some unused continental run flat tyres for a bargain price. My car is in need of a new tyre and the Mot is not far away, so I was considered buying them, but where does the mot law ( if any?) stand. Obviously Rover 75 ,s where not fitted with these tyres when they rolled off the production line. Can a run flat tyre be fitted to our cars whilst the other three tyres "still be of ordinary standard tyres ;for mot purposes.
All the very best,
Johnny.

Have you ever driven with run-flat tyres?
My BMW has Continental run-flats and they give a very hard ride compared to a 75. You will wonder where the thumping noise is coming from on poor surfaces.
Plus I would imagine you would need a matching pair of tyres on the same axle.

Whilst legal I would avoid run flat flat, they are harsh and it will feel awful having a mis match

Hi and thanks for replying. I've just been swotting up on the internet and cannot find much on the mot laws about mixing and matching them with standard tyres ,but as you say they are reported to be very harsh due to there stiffer walls. This alone puts me off them to be honest as the whole point of the 75 is it's refinement and forgiving ride qualities.

We bought a MINI recently with run-flats, and when one of them developed a slow puncture, I briefly considered switching to conventional tyres. However, after doing a lot of reading up, decided to stick with run-flats

This is quite useful information

Two key points are:-
  • Run flats must only be installed on a car which has TPMS/tyre pressure monitoring system. TPMS alerts the driver to a puncture so they are aware that they have a limited time to replace their tyre, and so they drive within the limits of their deflated tyre
  • As a general rule of thumb, you should avoid mixing different tyre types on a vehicle. This is also true of combining conventional and run flat tyres on a car – as their handling characteristics may differ, they should not be mixed on a vehicle.

Not worth the risk of mixing them, IMHO

If you changed all 4 the ride would be like everyone has said "harsh" but to only change 1 would unsettle the car which wouldnt fill you with confidence while pressing on .

All good advice given and taken on board. Thank you all for giving the time to post your views. I shall leave them well alone and replace with more conventional tyres.
All the very best,
Johnny.

Don't run flats have to be fitted to a wheel made for the purpose?

I bought a 2002 MINI for the other half a few years back.
Amongst other things, the first job was to ditch the run-flats for a set of new standard tyres.
The ride & road noise are a massive improvement to the point that it transformed the car.

Default run flats

run flat tyres can only legally be fitting with cars fitted with tyre pressure monitors
