Never thought about hot breaks cooling down but it makes sense. I'd been driving around here and there all day. I'll be very careful from now on that's for sure!

The handbrake shouldn't get hot (unless binding) as it is only used for parking. The hot parking brakes are on vehicles using the discs and pads for parking.

Ooopph interesting stories.

One bit of advice applies to all mechanical levers.

Never just yank lever on allowing the ratchet to click up.
Always press the button 1st and release when tight.

This avoids wearing the teeth of the ratchet down.

Also please not a modified compensator won't cure poorly gripping rusty drums, it simply limits the travel of the lever

Not even putting your vehicle in gear will stop it if like in the early 70s, My Forman and I stopped for lunch at a certain eatery, went inside after putting on handbrake, and putting it in 1st gear. About ten minutes later, a chap came in and shouted ‘whose is the lorry with the turf on the back’. Both of us said mine, we were delivering 300 yards of turf each. ‘ Well you might want to stop it, it is jumping it’s way across the car park’ Both shot outside to see the Forman’s lorry going across the car park towards a garden centres property. Jumped into cab put his foot on brake and it stopped. We were laughing about it, when it started off again. Long story short. There was a short on the starter motor which had threw the bendix into the flywheel and drove the lorry across the car park.We had to take the lead off the starter which was glowing red/white hot to make sure it did not happen again.

Its a combined disc, hub and drum, so the disc can get warm and expand the hub. Another good reason to plan ahead on the road, so as to avoid wasting energy braking.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

The ratchet noise is annoying anyway, always push the button in, unless counting the notches to a full application.

I agree on the rusty drum problem, the handbrake needs to be given just a tiny amount of regular work to do, to keep it free of rust. Regular application of the handbrake in the last few yards, just before you come to a stop, will keep it smooth and shiny for best grip.

Definitely a bunch of flowers for the neighbour and a lesson to get that handbrake sorted out.
