Default The woes of car painting

Yesterday decided to finally do a respray on the bonnet of my 75 diesel doer upper. The bonnet had peeling clear coat, almost like someone had spilt brake fluid or similar on it. The paint on the rest of the car is really good so not sure what the story was.
Yesterday sanded the bonnet down a got rid of all the loose clear coat.
Primed the bonnet , put down 3 coats of platinum gold , perfect colour match.
Today put the 2 pack clearcoat on, first coat was good, let that tack off and started to put the second coat on and low and behold the spray gun decided it still had a couple of bits of platinum gold in it !! leaving a couple of splatter in the clear coat- pity, the finish was perfect.
Now hoping I might able to cut it back as there was one coat of clear coat on already, otherwise it's re spray colour again and clear coat it again.
Moral of the story, clean your spray guns thoroughly and then clean them again or even better usedtwo separate guns ( which I normally do) but this particular gun sprays really well so re used it !!
What a pain !!

I feel your pain. I used to paint HGV's. Just got one finished and a pigeon got in the shed and added a splash of white!

Talking

A pigeon that can operate a spray gun must be an employment opportunity.

The pigeons by me have built-in spray guns and seem to carry a variety of colours

Could be worse, at least you're only spraying a bonnet. Back in the late 70s while stationed at North Coates during my RAF days, I travelled across to RAF Scampton for the annual airshow with a mate of mine (he was a painter and finisher). Can't remember what aircraft we were actually watching at the time, but a Vulcan bomber was due to display next and we could see it circling way off in the distance. I turned to Mal and said 'It doesn't look all that big from here' and he promptly replied 'Try getting on top of one with a sanding block.'

Yes, my father used to spray The Black Arrow aerobatic Hunters when they were stationed at North Weald in the '50s. The wings often had footprints on the wings left by the sprayers.

Today tried to wet sand out the small splatter marks, no luck seems they were
pretty deep in the clear coat so went about re coating the colour again.
Straight forward I thought, rough the surface up with wet / dry sandpaper, give its first re coat of colour- 3 small spots appear and start to craze.
God knows why, some sort of reaction in those spots only.?
After and hour of re priming sanding etc the offending areas finally got a good clean colour coat down.Let it dry over night before any further coats as it's getting cold over here (day time only 16c)
With a bit of luck will get the clearcoat on tommorow.
Can see why painters charge $500 to do a bonnet !!

As a teenager I taught myself to spray and working in the open I built and sprayed a number of custom cars that were featured in mags and won prizes at shows.

Working in the open meant that the biggest problem was flies. But I found that once the paint had dried they could be polished out...or sprayed over

To be honest, I used to prefer brush or roller painting Tekaloid coach finish for straight (non-metallic) colours. I've done several complete cars with a single litre (fantastic coverage in one coat) and the finish was like glass (even before the days of lacquer top coat!). I made a few bob back in the day picking up those faded red Vauxhalls and Fords, quick coat of post Office red and back through the auctions!
