fitted inline thermo - Page 3

just received another 88deg thermo for the housing and same issue! Takes forever to warm up to 9 o'clock and then will drop again to about 7 o'clock. Ill order the 91 deg thermo as advised. Ill let all this run over the winter but im defo going to get an oe replacement as soon as the weather allows me to get under the bonnet for prolonged periods.

Looking at the 91 degree thermo in picture linked, there is no flow-by hole like in the 88 degree one. I wonder if this is the problem. The fact that some coolant can bypass the actual thermo?

I bought a QH one from a parts shop here and i think its 86?

( didnt pay much attention but its a renault 5 one) havent had it running yet as in doing other jobs.

If it is 86 is it ok or should i opt for a higher one?

I found it easy to pop into the brand nuew pipe ( which is a lot stiffer than the old one was) by putting the stat in the freezer for 5 mins and putting the end of the hose in very hot water for the same time. smeered vasilene in side the hose and the stat slipped in do issue at all, left at room temp for a bit and sorted. No grinding required and you get a nice wee buldge to see where it is in the hose to clamp a jubilee on

that QH one doesn't look like it has this. Could this be the problem?

That'll be the same as the QH I stocked - I did have a run of 86 degree thermostats, however they did tend to run very close to the 89 degree items. I used 86s in the past and they held temperature fine.

I'm back to 89 degree thermostats now (purely as I can source them again) and from the members I've spoken to the difference is only marginal.

From tests conducted when this modification was first introduced, the presence of the air bleed/jiggle valve in the stat has a major effect on how well it all works. To get the anticipated results, you must use a stat without a bleed hole or the engine will never hit the rated temperature. Coolant flow through even an eighth inch hole is enough to cool the engine below the 88-90C. If your stat has the hole, it will work as expected if you solder it over.

I suspect (but don't know) that reports of this mod not working properly is because a vented stat has been fitted. It's a detail that's been forgotten about.

My QH one looks nothing like that, mine is the same as the one stocked here by DMGRS

Just for everyone's information, dont try and weld the wee hole in the thermo. I just did mine on the lowest settings on my welder and it blew the wax internals. I didn't run the welder for the duration of the weld. I just did short bursts. No result.

Buying the QH one aforementioned.

None of the thermostats I've stocked have had a bleed hole - I test each one before packing and they've all 100% held water with no bleed facility.

I've not had any reported bleeding issues, mind.

Bought a 92 deg stat yesterday usung the QH part number. The motor factors didnt stock QH but x-referenced the part number and gave me one that fits. It however had a small bleed hole as well. I was told that this is in case the stat fails shut it will allow pressure release.

Ill fit and report back.
