No the 700 miles will be a return trip completed once every 4 days....

So a Volvo or 75 are the clear leaders....., with a mazda 6 the one to avoid.
I am getting to know my way around a 75 diesel and all its various niggles and fixes....with a LOT of help.
So a 75 diesel tourer it is.......

My Brother in Law had one and the engine blew up too, at about 80,000 miles.
It was diagnosed as oil sludge. It took out the main bearings and the engine seized.
There seems to be a design fault with in inadequate pick-up for the oil pump, too.

Mazdas have a fantastic reputation for reliability, but I would not touch the Mazda 6 diesel.

I'd quite happily take the 2.0 petrol sport, just not the diesel

I would seriously consider a 75 Auto Diesel.

It's nowhere near your mileage but I do 300 miles a week in my 75 and it doesn't miss a beat. Couple weekends ago I did a 600 mile round trip in two days and it was effortless.

Doesn't lose a drop of oil, coolant is always on the level and the MPG is very good for such a big car.

I honestly wouldn't look anywhere else.

For long journeys, I would look for the best for comfort.
There is a survey here.

Also, ride quality is important too, and there is a survey here.

Or you could slum it in something like a Merc. or a Jag.

Did anyone really ever think that the answer would be anything else but a Rover 75 diesel auto?

Yes I think a 75 Auto Diesel Tourer would be ideal for the journey.....,
as I have family in Launceston you might even get to see it driving about.
The hunt is now on for a car, place to live and a new job.......
