Don't know if it has been suggested but why not a Beemer or an Audi A4?

If you need total reliability German engineering may be the way to go... but i guess that partially covers a 75 diesel anyway lol

Also why not a smaller more economical car since you need to do so many miles? I had an '04 Civic that i used to drive 700 miles from Wick to Lincolnshire in just one sitting no problem, and i have mechanical discs/screws/plates holding my lumbar spine together...! Just a though, if i was doing that many miles comfort vs. running costs would be my main concerns

Well as someone in 'the trade', they're absolutely awful if the DPF plays up. Sadly that's not the only issue with them, but it's the main one. My friend had one and got the DPF deleted - since then it's been OK, but it shouldn't have had to happen in the first place.

German engineering reliability is more of a marketing ploy these days.

The older Civic would be a safe bet though... as the most reliable cars are almost all Japanese. Not the most comfortable of rides and not exactly anything to get excited about.

That said, even French cars aren't as bad as they used to be , so I still reckon a diesel 75 is the way to go here.

Facelift mk.1 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi. Reliable, comfy and frugal. Like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CiTROEN-C5...-/191229238918

Automatic with cruise control for the average speed cameras, comfortable and totally reliable.
And to make the hunt harder I only have £1500 to spend.

I would really like a 75 but would this be the best car for the job?

What would you buy to do the job....LPG or Diesel....

The other estates I am considering are: Toyota corolla D4D
Honda accord CDTI
Skoda Octavia TDI
Mechanical condition will be the priority as the Devon hedges take no prisoners....
I have a 75 CDTi tourer, lovely car, just returned from a 300 mile return trip to Wales, not a hitch, 46 mpg, and very comfortable. You really do not feel the miles in these cars, I cannot see any alternative for the price. Good luck.

I think a no-brainer is definitely a 75 diesel or ZT diesel - I've done over 100k in them in 3 years, and wouldn't have anything else.

Lots of cars will do the job but not before you have spent over £1000 sorting its problems out...

Get a nice pre 1998 1.6 Honda civic auto... You know it makes sense.

I had a Honda civic ek3 shape i believe its called and that thing was rubbish for reliablity. Only starting when it wanted.

Not immobiser but something else as it just kept turning over but not starting.
In the end i sold it as spares or repairs for £90

No car is immune from breakdowns and at that age/price bracket there will always be something not 100%

I did think about an older diesel 406 or corolla, but pre 1998 cars tend to be pre ABS, Airbags etc.
Very reliable and simple engines but a bit lacking on safety equipment.....,
as I did say to mrs P a Honda fireblade would be a possible buy to commute.

But she quickly said "No way"......,

How about a Volvo V70 D5 Estate....should be in my price range for a 2001-2002 model with reasonable mileage ???
