I will look for both the 75 diesel or LPG Tourer and try to make my choose on the best maintained and cared for car in my price range.
Hopefully finding a new job and home will be as straight forward.....

What about a Rover 45 diesel. You can buy a real tidy one for around 1 k and the engines are bomb proof. On a good run they will return nearly 60 to the gallon and are cheap to service and repair when things go wrong. They've got a decent turn of speed and once up to motorway speeds there just as quite as any other diesel. I've had two now and run them to around 200 k with minimum problems happening.
The other big thing though you've still got that all important Rover badge proudly showing it self on your car. Hope this helps make your mind up Johnny

Well, just thought I would throw this in... my brother has a 250 mile each way weekly commute, and he bought a £700 rover 45 2.0 diesel. In 18 months he has had to replace the turbo and change the front brake pads. His commute is shorter, but it is all horrible roads, about 70 miles of motorway and dual carriageway and the rest is silly A roads bends and speed limits.

Could look at a different angle, i know i would rather be asleep on a train with my £1500 quid in my back pocket than stuck falling asleep behind the wheel of a car for 10-12 hours per week...! if train tickets vs. fuel+insurance+tax works out viable of course

I suspect the train ticket for that journey will pay for the car many times over!
