Door chrome plates

I fitted the Croft’s door plates many years ago but when one came loose I noticed a fair bit of rust I think caused by the silicon sealant that I used does anyone know which is the correct sealant which does not damage the paint work please?

Sikaflex caravan sealant doesn't cause corrosion.
