New to 75
Have recently acquired Rover 75 Con. SE. First registered 1999. In lovely condition inside and out with only 54330 on the clock. On checking the tyre pressures I noticed that the tyres on the front are smaller than the rear. Is this normal?

No, a standard car should have the same size all round.

They need to be the same size, otherwise the ABS may sense different wheel rotation speed, and register an ABS fault, light will come on, and possibly you'll have no ABS in an emergency.

Thank you. But to be more specific the front have 195/65 R15 and the rear 205/65 R15. Strange really. The car has had only two owners and with full service history. Your comments are much appreciated

Just the reverse for me. My 1999 V6 2.5 Connie has got 205/65/15 on the front & 195/65/15 on the back. All is fine, neither ABS fault nor any warning from the dash. The breaking is efficient and road holding as good as possible either on dry or wet grounds. Needless to say that tyres are the same on each axle: Goodyear efficient grip performance. Rover fitted the car with both dimensions from factory and I was told that in this case our French CT (MOT) doesn't care of. TBH my car was initially fitted with 205 on both axles. But 205 being 50% more expensive than 195, I'm to go back to 195. I've already stored the 195 for the front but Goodyear tyres are so good that I can't get them worn! EDIT: I've forgotten to say that my tyres are always slightly over inflated up to 2.6 kg / 2.55 bars / 37 psi at the front and 2.5 kg / 2.45 bars / 35.5 psi at the back. Checked every fortnight.

Thank you for this info Dorchester2. Has put my mind at rest. Will probably do as you will do and fit 195 all round when the time comes. However, my tyres are inflated as per the Rover manual at 30psi front and 28psi rear. Any thoughts on this?

I'm following as well Rover booklet in French: up to 2.6 kg / 37 psi if driving over 160 km/h (100 mls) or heavily loaded.
Hence that is allowed & doesn't do any harm to the tyres or alloys or anything else. On the contrary: now on those bl..dy road bumpers my mudflaps are no longer touching the road and even my mechanic told me it was a safe move on our roads deteriorated by potholes & the like. It preserves the tyres and an over inflated 15" tyre will ever keep more comfort than a normally inflated 17". I can testify to that. But it's up to everybody.
