I would remove the glovebox to do this job. More faff, but you can then see exactly what you are doing

Well, going in through the 'inspection plate/grille' has banished my bacterial smells.

Well, the ones emanating from the car itself anyway.

Thanks to T16 (and RattyB).
Removing the glovebox is the certain way to get into the recirculation vent/fan (which is hidden at the rear and top RH of the passenger footwell) - once you know where it is/how it's situated I guess you could do it by 'feel' from the footwell. Follow T16's aerosol technique - two good 5-6 seconds applications with a 20 minute interval between applications and a final hot setting drying off session of the hidden evaporator.
I think my AC is a good bit colder now and no odour at all.

Due to some recent mustiness l gave the system another bombing today, this time taking note of the recirc' inlet method so l removed the fusebox cover & trim panel ensuring there was no obstruction between the aerosol stream & the inlet grille. I got a Normfest bomb & freshener sent from ECP & did try to get some last-minute anti-bac foam but my local factor didn't have any. No matter, it's all fresh again for the moment.

I used to have a 1.8T and the previous owner had a spaniel. Even after valeting the car smelt of damp dog until an aircon bomb cleared it.

Half the problem is not using the air con all the time. Best way to look after an ac system is to keep it running all year.
