If it meets the recommended specs then I don't think it really matters. I use fully synth from Home Bargains.

Wot he said.
Just changed mine yesterday after +14K covered from the previous oil/filter change and same oil; semi-synthetic 10/40 £12/5L including delivery from same supplier.

That's certainly what you'd think at a first glance. However, I could mention a number of people who disagree. I'm not saying I do, but then again, I'm not a wine connoisseur either.

So, do we have any champions for the opposite view, that brands matter, and that discount oil is the sludge left over when the "top" brands have taken theirs?

I don't want to take any useless risk with NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- products.
Always buy well famed brand & no matter a miserable bargain... TLC is the motto!
I wish to keep my Rover beauties as long as possible, don't you?

Any well known brand that Rover designated for your particular car engine.

The most important wear saver is however regular oil and filter changes.

Halving Rovers quoted mileage will make sure your engine stays happy.--

Not sure that it should be compulsory to follow too strictly those recommendations that may be a little outdated since 2005.
Products have known an evolution since nearly 15 years that Rover engineers of that bypassed era could not.
In our discussion for example 5W40 shouldn't make any harm even 10W40 was formerly recommended. Better starts with E85 as well, another fuel that was unknown before 2005. However lots of cars built after 1995 can use it without any real damage with little adaptations (gossips about E85 are humbugs as lot of mates here in France can testify who are using E85 since 2007/2010 with the same car & thousands of km...).

Of course, it's true of anything really. Men's socks from Wilko https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-mo...ocks/p/0347972
do exactly the same job as socks from Yohoji Yamamoto
https://www.farfetch.com/uk/shopping...x?storeid=9462

- but I know which I prefer.

I am in the alternative camp.

MGR's specs define the minimum recommended oil performance that is acceptable for each of the engines. That does not mean something better will not deliver enhanced performance or longevity.

Primark, George and M&S socks perform the same basic function but very differently. I know which I prefer.

Similarly, Primark and Gossard or Rigby & Peller. Which would your lady prefer?

I typically use TripleQX from ECP/CP4L, however in the 75 with its turbo I use Mobil1 10w40.

For the 1.8 track car I use Shell Helix 10w40, been faultless and cheap enough that I just change it out after each track day.
There's a YouTube channel that compares friction shear protection and "cleanliness" of various brand oils
