Default Cigar lighter permanently live??

I recently fitted a dash cam to my car and after returning home one day last week, went back to the car overnight to see the dash cam still working, despite car being off/locked. Is the front cigar lighter supposed to be live permanently? Obviously, at present, i have to keep removing the dash cam power plug when i leave the car but its a pain!!

many thanks. My tourer is MK1 but fuse box (under glovebox) is mini fuses! So basically, there's no way round having to keep unplugging the dashcam with a lighter socket thats always on??

You could use a piggyback fuse onto an ignition live feed fuse from the box

My 53 plate MK1 was perm live with mini blade fuses and I left the camera plugged in for 3 days in france which was enough to flatten the battery

In my current 54 plate MK2 I've wired a 12v to USB controller into the ignition live/earth for the self dimming mirror and hidden the wiring in the headlining.

check your handbook and or fuse box, see what fuse positions are not being used and test them to see if ignition live or use a piggy back as suggested using an ignition live position

I hardwired my Nextbase for that very reason.

Permanent live is a pita

My 53 Mki has the larger fuses and a permanent live socket, which I intend to change to switched. I added a 3 port socket wired in to the radio feed for the dashcam and handsfree kit.

You can get a hardwire set up which stops power to dashcam if battery goes down to 12.5v. Going to try one for mine to monitor while parked.
But will put a switch in for "belt & braces".

My MkII has an always on lighter socket, so for my dash cam, I added a hidden extra lighter socket specially for the dashcam, behind the radio. I tapped the supply from the radio's switched supply. Just a loose socket on the end of its wire and the cam does not need much current.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
