Your symptoms seem very similar to Robbberd's, so whilst this is a rare fault, it isn't unheard of.

Real shame that there wasn't a positive conclusion to his thread.

I am sorry not to have an answer. I am a bit dubious about a crack opening when hot, though. I always though metal contracted when cold and expanded when hot. That's what gets seized nuts off bolts after heating the nuts.

Maybe it could happen, just thinking out loud. Then again, it hasn't been exposed to extreme external forces of heat, cold or impact, so a crack would have to have been a metalurgy flaw that has survived all this time before failing. It has happened on aircraft with the constant flex of pressurizing/depressurizing, but is still extremely rare.

It must be a component.

Cheers,
Glenn

Well, I am as puzzled as you are the car has done 186k miles so would have thought anything like that would have shown up before now.

If it is a rare occurrence then It will be me that has it

People often have difficulties with that concept.
"But it used to work perfectly for xx years!"
It is always the case, until it breaks, wears out or snaps.

such is life! "Past performance is no guarantee for future performance", as they say when they con you out of money!

Come to think of it, why does somebody not contact "Clobbered" and ask him what happened. It is likely he donated the car to somebody because of the problem, but there is a chance he could explain what went on. Him not being on the forum for quite a while indicates he might have lost interest, but who knows?? Email, phone or write!

I would try email or phone.
If he does not receive a notice of a PM via email, he is not likely to see it, if he does not frequent the forum anymore.
Has he got a registered email address, then try that.
Maybe even FB if you use that? I don't, but I have heard lots of stories of people being found that way, for better or worse!!

John looking at this photo of the oil cooler and filter assembly it would be worth removing yours and checking the gasket.

The top chamber (which as fitted would be to the right as you look at the block) is the coolant channel. The large chamber below it is the oil return from the cooler and the chamber below that is the oil supply from the pump which has a non return valve to prevent oil draining back to the sump.

That leaves one more oil chamber to the left which is adjacent to the cooling channel.

If that is a return back to the sump then any leakage there could allow coolant to mix with the oil.

I would also check the integrity of the cooling unit itself! That is the failure point on all the petrol units. The seal certainly looks as if it could be a problem, but we know the cooling units themselves also pose challenges.
