Trust Rover another of their self tapping bolts they will be 1.5 pitch or sometimes called metric fine. You could use 316 grade stainless steel sometimes called marine grade. Sadly my local nut and bolt man shut about 8 years ago after over a 100 years and employing 5 staff. 3 generations but no children to pass it on to sadly when he passed the business closed.
Why are all my special suppliers passing away are they trying to tell me something

I'm sorry Alan, but I must disagree with the advice of use of A4 stainless bolts for the toe adjustment bracket.

The tightening torque for these bolts is 100Nm, and even if the bolt has cold rolled threads, pulling up bolts of this dimension to this torque figure will result in galling, and if applying anti seize compound to prevent this, then this figure must be reduced to 80Nm to accommodate.

Due to the low carbon content of 316 stainless, even the reduced torque figure will result in thread bending, or a reduction in the shear area of the thread, meaning it is completely unsuitable for this application.......something your departed fastener specialist would have told you if he were still among us

Brian

P.S. this bolt design is not self tapping, the lead in consists of the minor diameter, with following thread form in 30% to 80% engagement, meaning it is almost impossible to cross thread a fastener while using a pneumatic nut spinner during the original assembly process.

For future reference.
The bolts mentioned around these parts as suitable alternatives from eBay actually come from Spalding Fasteners. They have a website. They're the M12 metric fine 10.9 grade self colour steel hex flange bolts in 45mm[1].
£4.66 each at time of writing.

[1] Yes, I know the original measurement was 60mm, that's the overall length. Bolts are actually sized by shank length.

Got 'em swapped out. I approached them with trepidation as they were all pretty horrible (I'm also replacing all the, thoroughly rotten, suspension. It's very rusty under here) and it was obvious that someone had been at the offside ones with a 12 point socket. (IMHO attacking anything torqued over 50Nm, or rusty, or both with a 12 point socket should be an offence punishable by death.)

Anyhow, I decided that attempting subtlety was likely to make a bad situation worse and proceeded as follows:
1) Hammer on an 18mm impact socket as far as possible, remove same.
2) Clean the, now loosened, scale off the bolt head and flange so the socket can get hard up to the flange.
3) Hammer the socket on again.
4) Apply el cheapo Chinese electric impact gun.

It would seem to be vital to get the socket all the way on as, despite the huge bolt head, the amount that's actually hexagonal and of the correct size is quite small. A truly dreadful piece of design.
All six came out fairly easily with this approach, although one of the nearside ones took a good 15 seconds on the gun trigger before it shifted.

Are these the ones you used Sean?

https://www.spaldingfasteners.co.uk/...-flange-bolts/

- M12 Metric Fine 10.9 Grade Self Colour Steel Hex Flange Bolts
- Product Code: PARENT1053
- Length 45mm (does it refer to B, H or C in diagram?)

Six of them come out at £19.33 + delivery direct from the website.

Or (if these are the right ones) £23.35 on eBay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Metric-Fi...item89980a46fe (M12 x 45 part threaded?)

Hi simon,
As far as I can tell, both ads are advertising the same product. Metric, fine, M12 x 1.5 x 45 long, grade 10.9, flanged head bolts.
So, I’d just go for the cheaper ones.
Edit.....
Or contact Spalding directly, and email them the photo in post #62.
I’m sure they’d be happy to sort you out with the same bolts, that have worked fine for me.

Ok Sean - many thanks for the advice/info. That's saved me a whole heap of searching.

Here are mine - ordered direct from website https://www.spaldingfasteners.co.uk/...-flange-bolts/

The steel rule is just to give a rough idea of size (the bolt is at an angle on the scanner and the rule isn't).

Spalding's website is slightly cheaper than using their eBay shop.

NB. I wrote the 1st line of the description, not Spalding (they're not telepathic ).

A 16mm socket is the closest fit.
