Manual verses automatic.
I currently have a Rover 75 diesel manual gearbox saloon.
I wish to replace it with a tourer diesel but not sure wether to buy a automatic this time. Can anyone who has had experienced both manual and automatic please give an insight into the pros and cons of each and which one they prefer? |

Well there are pros and cons, like the diesel being more to tax and less mpg than the manual, but on the other hand there's no clutch assembly to worry about.
But at the end of the day I think it's down to personal preference. I love my ZT-T auto and think the combination of the tourqey diesel and auto box is a winner. Its not the most advanced auto but at least its a 5 speed and works well if in good fettle.

I have both and I think you have to try both for yourself to decide. The automatic is brilliant in heavy traffic but makes me sleepy on very long drives . The manual when the clutch is perfect and you're not stuck in traffic worrying how long it's going to last , is the one I prefer on long runs plus it's probably about 10 mpg better on diesel Don't forget the government will also rob you of an extra £100 a year for not changing gear yourself !

Apart from the obvious enjoyment of a TF that is manual for a sporty drive, every car I buy now is auto for the better experience. It’s tedious pressing a clutch when in traffic.

One day perhaps I'll own an auto but not at the moment. In stop start traffic and slow moving traffic, an auto too has its "draw backs". Auto can travel too fast in slow moving traffic. Still need manual intervention for engine braking Auto: Less chance of stalling possibly better when reversing a trailer as no need to slip clutch to reverse slowly less to think about...some people cant cope with a manual easier for those that have a physical issue pressing clutch pedal may not roll backwards or forwards when going up a steep hill when left in drive /reverse and you have stopped, some roll some dont manual for me....more fun apparently less tax but that should not be an issue when deciding which to buy better control reversing up a steep slope macafee2 macafee2 |

In a car like the 75 I think the auto suits it best. Plus some of the reliability issues of the manual are avoided

For me its Automatic everytime, much more relaxing to drive. Why would you want to manually change gear anyway

My first 75 tourer was a manual, and whilst on holiday the clutch decided to give up, so made it an expensive trip.
Was great that you could chug along at 30 in 5th (was a diesel) and put foot down and it would go all the way to 70 (and beyond) without changing gear. When I changed it, it was for an auto, and to be honest in my opinion it's a much better car. Again a diesel but with the auto box, a much more refined drive. Much easier in traffic, and in general a better combination in my mind. Yes, it's slightly more to insure than a manual, and more to tax, but hey I don't mind paying the little bit extra.

manual, some people describe them as a drivers car. some people prefer autos, some manuals and I doubt either will appreciate the others view point. macafee2 |
