Smile A/c condenser

Hello gang, it looks very much that I need a replacement Condenser for my Rover 75 auto diesel (05) facelift. I am waiting a reply from Jules who has been suggested could supply one, so in the mean times I am going down all routes!

Hi Les.

That's a very good question Steve, as Les' last post reported a non-rotating radiator fan.

Hi Steve, a fair question to ask. The specialist that checked my A/C said it should have maintained a vaccum of 1000mb for 30 min, mine dropped 20mb in that period and the seals are suspect - even a pin hole in the condenser! As my local Guys have it booked in for a resister change, and having the front end off, it's just as easy to change the condensor as well. I consider that labour is the biggest cost in the equation so hence the condensor exchange. It's my way of thinking these days - never paid labour costs in the past as I did the lot myself, but not now!

Hi Les,

I get the part about not duplicating labour charges, but in this case, I REALLY think you should get the A/C specialist to put some dye in the system to see where any leak may be. Arbitrarily changing a condensor could cost a lot more than taking the bumper off again, which should be less than a half hour job.

I don't think you ever told us that your air conditioning was not working when the car is moving/driving. The fan is not required for the A/C to work when driving.

Cheers,
Glenn

Hi Glen, you will have seen my reply to "arctic", and thanks for your interest in my reasoning. I came across a brand new Rover Original condenser for my car at only £60.00 inc P/P. To my mind this is far cheaper then my garage at £40/50 per hour plus the A/C company at similar cost per hour, as the car has only done 43K but is still 14 years old though - so it deserves a treet me thinks!

Thanks for the explanation Les although I don't have the same faith in it as you do.

It's true that your condenser seals will shrink slightly if your air conditioning system hasn't been run for a long time, but all that is required to rectify this is to use it! The oil which circulates with the refrigerant keeps them supple and leak free.

As Glenn says, the dye should mark any leaks from the condenser and a specialist should have the equipment necessary to identify them. For significant leaks, the dye is visible to the naked eye.

Les, have you been using your air conditioning at least once a month all the year round? If not, that could be your only problem.
