Exactly, the problem is anyone walking down the street can see what a registration number is of a similar, or indeed an identical model of car.

Quick snap with the phone, and then check askmid, DVLA, VOSA etc and one of the no questions asked "showplate" manufacturers on eBay, and hey presto instant "kosher" car

The only benefit of driving something that is becoming slightly less than run of the mill, is the likelihood of someone doing this type of thing decreases slightly.

This happened to a friend of mine, he got around the issue by transferring a cherished plate onto his car, and the third party who had been using the cloned plates was captured in short order as the numberplate was no longer valid and pinged an ANPR poilice car.

Just a thought, would save the hassle of being stopped all of the time by the plod, and receiving unwanted NIP, parking fines etc etc etc.

Very common here in Ireland, as we have in practice two separate countries with no border in between, and of course two completely separate vehicle registration schemes and administrations. So, if you live in the South, and don’t want to tax your car, or want to get up to something dodgy, you just stick a Northern registration on your vehicle, and off you go… doesn't even have to be the same kind of car here, as there’s no cross-border checking.

I live in Northern Ireland. A year or two ago, my parents got something like a summons from an authority in the South claiming they hadn’t paid a road toll, and including a photograph of their registration number on a white Transit (they drive a grey Focus).

Nobody in the South is remotely interested if you write to them etc – it’s pay up, or else. Of course, the flip side is that, if you don’t pay (and we didn’t), there’s sweet FA they can do to enforce it either. My parents are very elderly now, and there’s no possibility of them crossing the border in their car – but, if they did, they’d risk arrest

The thing is when this happens the police should give you the option of a free new registration. But you would still be out of pocket with the actual plates and our rear ones aren't cheap or that easy to source

Had a similar thing with a Mondeo estate, suggesting I had been using a scrapped car!

Turned out it was a simple keying error but it caused no end of 'phone calls and stress.
