One very reluctant sale was my very rare (and actually in remarkably good condition) Renault 19 16valve cabrio, LPG converted. After it died from knackered alternator/flat battery on the M6 in bank holiday traffic, causing all 4 southbound lanes to be stopped by police so the car could be recovered from the central reservation (don't ask!). With 140k miles on it, new alternator, and running beautifully, but knowing that it would be asked to do 20,000 in the next year, I reckoned an Audi diesel would be the sensible alternative. Especially as SWMBO had said she would never go in THAT car again, so embarrassed was she, and neither could I keep another car, I traded it for £350 against said Audi. Still regret it, especially as we had a hot summer, and the Audi's aircon didn't work!

To the above post.

''Reluctantly'' according to the OP should read---'With visibly unbounded enthusiasm'.

Ooops. Sorry but I just HAD to say it.--

What a refreshing alternative to the recent spate of coded cobblers.

If we're offering up tired cliches in For Sale adverts, can I throw in variations of "Condition commensurate with age ..."

Outside of statistics, probability and some niche industries I don't think the word commensurate is ever used other than to indicate the car is tired.

"Good condition for age" is a popular one. Any of our cars with an MoT must classify in this category, as most cars don't last 15 years!

Sold hundreds of cars over the years and the sellers of cars are as bad as the public buyers. I had a very tired Golf diesel for sale for £495 with 185k miles on it. I had people asking...
1. Are there any marks on it at all.
2. Has it got comprehensive VW history.
3. Has it got 2 keys and has the cam belt been done recently.
4. Would you take a p/x swap no cash either way.
6. Will you put 6 months tax on it.
7. Will you deliver it to London.
8. etc etc Its £500 not £1500 or £5000!

I'm sure a lot of sellers are selling because the car has faults, and some not instantly spotted. If a seller is 'reluctant to sell' it's probably to make the buyer think it's a good car.

The truth is some sellers want/need to realise as much as they can get because:
they are in a hole which is getting deeper
they are looking to buy (again) what they either can't afford or properly run
they are lying
and, occasionally, it isn't theirs to sell.

The last one has happened to me twice, by club members, I know - unbelievable but perfectly true. When I was looking for a first 75 11 years ago. Fortunately, I am just a bit too long in the tooth. Those members no longer have a presence here and not because of me.

Those missing members ( not missed by me I might add.Lol. ) were probably hoisted by their own Petard.--
