Default Low Cost Code Readers

I have at long last sourced some low cost fault code readers.
I will have two types in stock from tomorrow.
CR1 is £42.99 inc vat and reads and clears fault codes on petrol cars from 1996 and diesels from 2004. It also displays sensor data so you can check your boost pressure, IAt, ECT, TPS, rpm, Speed etc. It supports all protocola automatically except can bus.

CR2 is identical but also supports diagnostics over the can bus. This isn't implemented yet but will be from 2008 so it would be a good choice if you are thinking of a new motor next year. (Pity it can't be a 75 or ZT) It costs £73.99 inc vat

I will put up photos and specs on my website tomorrow.

Ron

Good stuff Ron. Will the CR2 be a better buy for 75/ZT owners?

Only if you want some future proofing should you buy some other make next of 2008 model year.
My Xtype has the can bus connections at the socket but being 2007, the diags still use the K line. Pity, as I had hoped for fast updating of the sensor data when logging it.

Would the CR1 tell me which of my ABS sensors is not working?

No this type of code reader is only for engine diagnosis.

Now added more details and photos.

Works fine on my Xtype. Quick to identify the protocol (PWM) and connect. The optional PP3 battery (supplied) is useful because you can disconnect it and still view the logged codes. (Most handheld tools are powered from the diag socket so as soon as you unplug them they switch off)

Comes with a carrying case and cd of fault codes.

The instruction book doesn't mention the power button so I thought I had a duff one! Doh.

A decent bit of kit for the money (Cr1 type typically sells for over £59 and CR2 type for over £89)

Right, just tried this on my 2004 Mk1 CDTi and works a treat. Easy to use and picks up the fault codes no problem. So it looks to me that if you have an additional IAT sensor in the intercooler hose (just before the EGR) it may work on Mk1 CDTi's. Can detect lot's of useful info including boost presure and intake temps.

Also tried on my wifes 2004 ZR petrol aad again fine.

Well worth the money - one fault and it's paid for it's self!!
