ABS AGAIN - that chesnut!
Okay, so on the way home from East Kirkby Bones threw the ABS light. I knew it was front driver's wheel as the speedo and fuel went as well. I had a sensor so I got a mobile guy to come out and do it this afternoon. He said the wire on the old one was broke, but then kept saying the new sensor wouldn't go all the way in. When I started it up the light went out until I tried driving her, now its back on. He says it must be the bearing but I am not convinced he has the sensor in right. he says he can't get it in or out now and left.
Could it still be the sensor? I don't know anyone reputable close by except the Xpart dealer at Riddings which will charge a fortune and only work the same hours as me, but I don't want to keep paying ordinary garages and end up with an even bigger bill, and its a bit far to take to Andy (and I am sure he never wants to see her again!) If there is time I will try and get a T4 at tomorrow's Nano, but not sure that will help as I know which one it is! |

There's nothing left of the original sensor. It broke up.

Perhaps he left some of the broken up sensor in the hole.

Dawn, if you have bought an after market sensor, sometimes they dont go all the way in. I have a thread somewhere here about my experiences. My aftermarket one stood away from the hub slightly, and would bolt in tight, and work ok for a few miles, then the light would come back on. Each time i found the sensor had lifted out of the hole slightly.
The only thing that worked was a genuine mgr sensor. Expensive, but it worked. |

Yes it was aftermarket, but he's hammered it in so tight it won't come out. Need to find someone local who knows what they're doing, and that is like asking for gold.

He obviously didn't have much of a clue what he was doing. Light out, then coming on when you move, suggests the sensor was basically fine and maybe all it needed was someone to fit it properly rather than with brute force. The hole should have been cleaned out carefully with a drill, with a vac sucking dirt out all the time. They should push in and pull out fairly easily. Now you need to find some way to get it back out, in one piece which might not be easy. You might try soaking in releasing fluid and trying to turn it with some grips and hope. Some have reported the aftermarket ones don't penetrate into the hole far enough, giving your type of symptoms - and have found they can get them to work by trimming the fixing lug back a bit so they go deeper.

This sensor is definitely had it now anyway. I don't know who to trust with this kind of "little" job any more. It's like when I took my V6 for an oil change and they rang me to say could I take it back another day because they couldn't find the sump plug. It's beyond a joke! I couldn't have made a bigger hash of it myself! I may have to bite the bullet and go to the Xpart place near Alfreton or Austin's. I think they are the closest that know these cars, but they charge a fortune.

Terry Shaw, TS Autos in Stourbridge, a bit of a trek but at least it'll be done right. A few people have used Terry's services and been very pleased, I can vouch that he knows our cars inside out.
Martyn. P.S. Lates also highly recommended. Last edited by squire; 22nd July 2018 at 20:35.. Reason: Addition |
