Default Fan not kicking in

Hi all, never had a problem until today, the car had always run ok but today went and got the air conditioning recharged, compressor was kicking in and out for a few seconds and the radiator fan won’t kick in, temperature gauge goes to the red and it never has done before, the fan won’t work but their is a buzzing from that area, I dare not move the car at all now, any ideas greatly appreciated, if I leave it running the temp gauge gradually starts to climb but the fan won’t kick in

Might just need an upgraded resistor (if it has one)

Do you mean the fan motor shaft is spinning, but the fan blades are not turning? Someone else recently had that problem.

Cheers,
Glenn

Still on the original resistor from what I can see, just left it ticking over until it got warm, no buzzing at all, actually heard the buzzing noise kick in as the car got really warm, the fan blades are loose and fall forward if you put a long screwdriver to them, I will sort a fan out first and get it fitted, just hope there isn’t any damage due to it getting so hot

Car has always run cool in my ownership and struggled to reach the first line on temp gauge!

I think it is Jules who can sell you a complete new 2-speed fan assembly with gold resistor. It's not a 1.8 so hopefully OK. Fingers crossed.

Probably due to original stat wide open, if it has a resistor fitted its a 2 speed and most likely has a silly 55w silver resistor that’s shot, always replace 55w silver resistors with 100w gold. RS supplies sell them dirt cheap

The low speed resistor has failed so it won't trip the fan motor until the coolant reaches 106C or so. This activates the motor at full speed, hence the buzzing you noted. The fan blade unit has detached from the motor drive flange so no cooling available at any speed. See this recent thread for advice: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=285832

The slow speed is tripped on at 100C, but with the resistor being open circuit, you won't hear the motor buzzing. The aircon will also be dodgy because the continuous slow speed fan is needed there too.

Basically, reattach the blades unit (see above link) and replace the silver resistor with a gold upgrade available from forum traders, eBay and electrical outlets like RS Component, etc.

It's unlikely to have caused any damage, but keep an eye out on coolant level, etc. when the above is all fixed.
TC
