I tend to find that the hairs on my legs ladder the tights as I put them on - and then the heat escapes thru' the ladders

That was the temperature in my bedroom on a number of occasions last winter and regularly in my bathroom and toilet. You don't know what 'cold' is you lot! Thankfully it's quite tropical in my living room at the moment - 12c.

At least you have central heating! We have no gas, and whoever owned the house in the past removed the storage radiators, all we have is a oil filled heater for downstairs and a halogen radiator for the bedroom!
