I am experiencing the exact same problem as T Cut on my 1.8 Club SE petrol, I also get the catalyst below threshhold error p0420, my question is are the sensors able to be replaced with the universal 4 wire sensors, (if i change the connector) that seem to be available at a resonable cost, and are the upstream and downstream sensors the same.

Universal sensors, IMO, are more trouble than they are worth. The seem to last to get you through the current years MoT, and thats it (by way of a generalisation).

A bit of careful googling will find you the genuine items out there at not much more cost that the universal items.

Try Brown and Gammons for genuine sensors.

I wonder if the 1.8 T would get away without a cat ? as my 1.8 none turbo just did, i was talking to out M.O.T tester today about cat's and i had a look in the m.o.t testers manual and theirs nothing much about them in their !!! i was also on a web site that stated that "There is no requirement for a catalytic converter to be fitted to any vehicle, regardless of its age" !!! its what comes out of the exhaust that counts, "Its not the 'cat' that's being tested".

When my catalyst lost about 50% of its contents, it failed the MOT emmisions test.
