Default Q: does gearbox oil get changed with clutch?

just trying to work things out - not sure if this an essential operation of the clutch change or flywheel change on the diesel engine?
anyone throw some light...

The driveshafts have to be removed before the gearbox can be taken off. This will probably cause some oil loss. Mr Haynes also recommends renewing the drive shaft seals before refitting the gearbox, so a change of oil would make sense. I can't see that an oil change is 'essential' unless it's reached the normal service life of 7 years or 105K miles.

Exactly as above

I changed it at the time simply because it is one of those why not do it anyway type of situations, can't do any harm can it

a 7MM (I think it was 7mm) allen key is needed, loosen the plugs before refitting the box as access is easier on the floor, mine were tight.

Thanks both.

hmmm. bet it hasn't been done then if it was inessential.
I see also that its every 90k change advised rather than 105k, according to the service schedule on the club site.

Any thoughts on box longevity? And anyone heard of any failures or had to attend to any re-bushing of linkages? (Mine feels a bit sloppy) I know your Tourer that you changed the clutch on, Keith, was getting on in miles too?

Normally some oil is lost and generally just topped up unless at a point where it needs to be changed. The seals usually don't get damaged so they to can be left. The boxes are generally very reliable, I have never had to strip one and if memory serves me right you need a press that is of greater force than most general garages have

Original gearboxbox in the one I replaced the clutch in had lost 3rd gear, and was probably the reason the clutch was burnt out.

It now has a box from a 30,000 mile car in it

this piece of plastic on the selector had broken

PS

You need special tools to get the box apart or an angle grinder
Not a diy repair item imho
