Default Another water pump

Any of you learned people out there have any info why both my Rover 75 2.5 kv6 engines are chewing through water pumps.?
My 2003 motor had 3 water pumps fitted by the local mechanic over 18 months all with leaking seals.Luckily they were all covered by warranty until they finally got a good one which has lasted thus far 24 months with no issues.
Now the wifes 75 has now developed a water pump seal leak, drips first thing when cold and then after getting warm no leaks, not a drop all day.
Unfortunately this pump was bought online from the UK some 24 months ago and i got an EU made pump (cONTINENTAL) thinking it would be better quality but the car has only done 15,000 km since being fitted.
I would have thought I should get more life out of it than that.
Ive emailed the online company (E CAR) re their 12 month warranty (I see on the box Continental says it carries A 24 MONTH WARRANTY) but no reply as yet
.Is there somthing my mechanic is missing when fitting or is the quality of pumps gone through the floor ?

No idea on those pumps, but I've sold about 30 BGA items from my own Shop since April and not had an issue.

I do know some KV6 pumps are problematic and do leak, so it's important to pick a good one up.

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 2.5 last summer, when I had the dreaded cambelt service and followed all the advice that it makes sense to change the water pump at the same time. Within six weeks, the engine overheated and the problem was diagnosed as a leaking water pump.

Fortunately, no damage appeared to be done and the excellent mechanic replaced the pump under warranty - but it was all a very anxious time as you can well imagine!

Sometimes, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' seems the best policy!

All the best, Nicholas/Zircon

This all goes to show how the quality of material has gone south since cheap imports arrived.
As mentioned, I got a Continental brand pump shipped to me (in Australia) thinking as it was made in the EU it would be better quality as all the other pumps appear to be made in China, obviously it dosn't matter.
Due to the costly nature of fitting the pump,I will only get it supplied and fitted by a local mechanic as at least if the pump fails under warranty, they can than then make a claim to the pump supplier for faulty parts and any labour.
Seems to me it dosn't really matter what brand you get, just the luck of the draw as weather you a good one or bad one as the bearings never seem to go,just the seals.

a over tight cam belt could cause a pump to fail too, could be a possibility?

Another factor about repairs in general which is often overlooked is that recommended procedures are sometimes not followed and torque wrenches are not used. In these cases, it may not be poor quality parts which are to blame. There's too much emphasis on doing jobs quickly rather than meticulously.

When reporting a leaky pump could posters tell us where the leak appears from, the weep hole at the base of the pump or perhaps around the mounting plate periphery?

I think - but am not sure - that in my case it was the latter (around the mounting plate) where the leak occurred (I was simply told that the pump was leaking).

Each time my pump seal failed,it was never a flood of water, just a drip here and there, usually when the engine is cold at first start up.
Coolant runs down from the bottom of the water pump onto the top of the oil cooler then down and the marks blow back onto the pan underneath.
If you have an under tray fitted on your car, a small drip leak like that will never get noticed as it evaporates before leaving the tray.
Only sign is if you check your fluid levels and find small drops in fluid levels or remove your tray and check for marks or drips.
It seems alot of people are suffering the same issue on the KV6 engine water pump seals and it seems it is all after new pumps have been fitted.
The original pumps seemed to get up to 100,000km on some vehicles.
Either got to be just poor quality manufacturing across the board (most of the bits in ANY pump made anywhere comes out of China, there just assembled in different locations, or the KV6 engine has an issue re wearing out pumps, internal pre0ssures (coolant system over pressuring) caused by faulty expansion caps etc.
Who knows but keeping these cars running when costly repairs require to done then re done due to poor parts is costing alot.
