Default Valuation

Hi folks- you might have noticed that my car is up for sale.

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1235701

I have struggled with the valuation - my initial thoughts were around 2000-2500 pounds, but then some folks in the 75/ZT world suggested I should advertise it at a higher price due to its unique reg (08 plate, one of the last registered) and being a very low mileage diesel in very good condition. I have advertised at around the 3000 pound mark in a few places, but only had one call so far from a guy who said he would come straight over and take it off my hands for 2000 - a dealer I guess, even though he said he was buying it for himself.

I am not in a hurry, so am happy to wait a week or two and see what happens before adjusting the price, but would value any thoughts from members n here (without getting too abusive, please !). I realise that if I traded it in at a new car dealership I would be lucky to get more than 1000.

Cheers

Pete

Think of a number that you will be happy with.

Personally, I would not even consider the car, as essentially it has sat for at least 3 years somewhere - but then that is just me being silly if I am honest, as any issues this would have caused should have been rectified by now.

In this climate (and the market) 3k will be a hard sell, not impossible I am sure, just hard. It is an 08 registered car, but you can get an 08 plate put onto it (well in NI you could, where I am) or you could put a private plate on it, and suddenly it becomes a low mileage poverty spec 75 (poverty spec cars are quite unusual, especially with steel wheels though!). In 10 years time it will be something special, unfortunately now though, it is an above average (it looks really really good to be fair) Rover 75.

If it was me, and someone offered 2k for it, I would explain that my number was 3k, however (my favourite phrase for bargaining), if we could meet halfway at £2.5k? But I would only entertain any price discussion in person, as if someone offers 2k unseen, they turn up, and they could bang the price down further 'because of this or that'. It is a psychological trick. Instead of a price of 3k to be bargained down from, they now have you thinking 2k, so £1500 now doesnt seem so bad.

That is my take on it, and it certainly looks to be a nice car, well presented etc. I wish you well in its sale.

Don’t ask for valuations.
List it as you wish, it will either sell or it won’t.
Then you’ll know it’s value

£2500 to £3000 isn't unreasonable Pete, it's a base spec car, but this can be countered with the late registration, along with the lower than average mileage.

At the end of the day it's a difficult one, I suspect this may be one of the worst times in history to sell a car, and you are aiming at a niche market......mainstream buyers see a twelve year old car from a defunct maker and one without trinkets associated with comparable cars you may be able to buy for a few hundred pounds.

Put this into context, I was offered a BRG Mk2 with 52,000 miles on the clock, a 2005 Connoisseur for £1300 last week and declined the seller politely.

Dealer calling you or not, are you happy with 2k?

No rush to sell means you can park it up somewhere warm and dry and maybe see the value firm up at 3k?

Too many variables, opinions and what a buyer is looking for will affect any value.

10 years from now it could be a sought after gem. Not many low spec cars are being saved.

Good stuff Pete, sounds bang on the money to me.

Any ideas as to what you might replace it with?

Sad to see it go, but I have to make space for my retirement project - probably an MGA roadster. I'll still keep an eye on what is going on on here, to see what you reprobates are up to !

Cheers Pete
