A good lesson nevertheless: I should have look at was was indicated in front of me but I had two lovely little grandchildren - the smaller, a girl (!), not very patient! - on the back seat to take home, that's my excuse. Hence we took the 25 without air con...

Sounds like a ECU set from a manual has been fitted, seen this a few times now.
If so the solution is to have the the ZCS coding of the car reprogrammed so that the correct tune can be applied, unless it's an early manual ECU thaty been fitted which would require the correct ECU as the early manual one cannot be reprogrammed with an auto tune

Outside Teesside Law Courts I saw a gent sitting in his Rolls trying to start it...with the lever in 'D'. I advised my " learned friend", it won't start in D or R.

Done worse, after a long lay up, car refused to turnover, no problem, battery must be flat and I do have a fully charged spare in the other cars garage 1/2 mile away.
Went to collect spare battery and then returned and fitted it only to find car still didn't start.
Moving D to P solved the problem and thankfully I was alone

Edit to my previous post, found out that the ECU fitted to Sean's car is definitely for an automatic.
In that case it's possibly a problem with the switch on the gearbox
