Auto Box Service Liverpool / NW West?
Hi,
My diesel auto tourer is going well at 167,000 miles... I usually do my own servicing, but never tackled an auto gearbox fluid change before. The car came to me at 90,000 miles with a very complete service history... but no mention of ever changing the fluid. In the 6 years and over 70,000 miles I have done, its not been changed. I am usually very keen on my servicing, but.... part of me thinks if all's well leave it alone (if it aint broke don't fix it!!) but ... it keeps nagging away that this probably should be done before too long. So, I know its important to get the right fluid if I decide to do it myself.... but more inclined to get this done by a "specialist"... anybody care to recommend anybody in the Liverpool area, or North Wales? The only thing putting me off is I remember my brother a few years ago taking his beloved Vauxhall Senator for a "routine" gearbox service.... cost him nearly 2 grand eventually!!! And it was running fine until the "experts" touched it! |

Hi
You could go to Jules. He did a auto box fluid change on mine a few weeks ago. He's a Rover specialist and comes highly recomended. What he doesn't know about our cars is not worth knowing. Johnny

Hi Dave,
I had mine done at Robbs Garage (Wallasey) Auto Transmission Specialists in 10/2011, 30k miles ago and had no problems since. They use the Wynn's method, where they evacuate the oil so its all changed (not the normal 50% by draining method). Oil is replaced with correct specification and grade accoring to their (Wynns) information with an additive to help restore seals etc. Robbs Garage Claremount Road Wallasey Merseyside CH44 2BW Tel: 0151 638 1384 Best regards Dennis |

Thanks guys for the prompt replies.
Never realised Jules did this, had a cooling fan from him a while ago, top chap and I pass by all the time. Atherton is also not far away but if I am going to have it done it will be probably be in the next week or two while I have a few spare days... Wallasey is quite handy too, always nice to use somebody thats recommended. What sort of price are we looking at, roughly? Thanks Dave |

Dave,
For what it's worth, here are my views on your questions: Quote:

Don't choose on price Dave, or whether a garage is "handy". Only use ATF listed as a replacement for Texaco N402 spec. Here's a list. Also, manufacturers advise never to use additives with ATF so I would avoid anyone who suggests that. It's just a gimmick to persuade you to use them rather than anyone else. Good luck. Simon

Hi Dave,
Cost at Robbs was £160 all in, should say that the Wynns system also includes flushing the autobox oil out, it's not just a straight oil change. Probably cost a bit more than some but I had used them before with good results and they originally came recommended by a local garage, as one of the best autobox specialists around the area. Can't disagree with any of your comments! I would usually do it myself, just a little short of time at the moment and lots of other stuff to do.... still enjoy working on cars and happy thats it been done properly! I have read that its a bit involved... but come on, is it really that dificult??? There isn't anything really I haven't tackled on my cars over the years... apart form the auto box!! I did discover earlier this year, after replacing front coil springs..... make sure you get the best tools you can, proper tools make all the difference... but after buying coil spring compressors, extra long breaker bar and new socket .... what I spent was more than my local garage would have charged me to fit them. And it took ages..... hence why I was considering using a garage to tackle this for me. As for the car going well at 167,000.... I have said many times, I firmly believe that is down to the regular 80 odd mile trips it does a few times each week, nearly all dual carriageway/ motorways, little time spent plodding around town, and very regular oil changes.
