Default Yet another cooling fan issue

Hi all, newbie to posting.
I have a 2003 MG ZT cdti which i've owned for the past 3mths ( previous car was 1999 75 diesel classic owned for 9yrs) My problem is that i had a hole in the AC pipe (common fault due to the power steering pipe). Had it re gassed today but the garage told me that the cooling fan is not going fast enough, only turned with the use of a long screw driver to get it started . it seems to run freely but very slow.
Never had aircon before just lots of windows to open on hot days.
Any suggestions would be very helpful

Our cars are cursed with fan failure, I have one here in the lounge waiting to fit.
There are different types of fans and you need the correct one if buying used, some can be modified too.
Do a search using this link, it is far better then the forums own search button. There are traders on here that supply new Revotec fans.

Ken.
Edit: For future reference the Google search button can be found on the main page showing the different threads, it`s at the top left.
Second Edit, Decent info in this thread too:

Hello Mark and to the club.

As your car is 1999 I'd say that one of your fan motor brushes has worn down to its minimum length. You have three options:
  • Open the motor casing and renew the brush(es). This is very rewarding if you like doing your own maintenance and don't want to spend money unnecessarily. Ensure that you buy the new brushes from here as the specification was determined with the help of this club.
  • Replace the motor and control box with a refurbished 2 speed system. Club member Arctic usually has some available and is very experienced in this field. They are available new from X-Part but cost several hundred pounds.
  • Replace the motor with an aftermarket Revotec unit sold by club trader Jules.

Mark, I would recommend that you don't use your air conditioning with the motor in this condition. If you do, it is only a matter of time before the worn brush pops out of its holder and destroys the motor completely. As it stands, it's a good candidate for repair. Even if you don't choose this option, Arctic may be interested in taking it off your hands to help others in future.

Thanks for the replies, this site has been a goldmine of information over the past 10yrs of owning 75's.

SD1 i think you misread the post. My current car is a 2003 MG ZT cdti, my old car was the 1999 75 (which i still have on the drive).
Was wondering if i could fit the fan of that one if its working ok?

Sorry Mark. You're right; I didn't spot that the car in your profile isn't the one about which you're asking. Any chance that you can list both cars? It saves having to refer back to the first post as the thread gets longer.

Does your 2003 car have a 2 speed (resistor) or 3 speed fan system?

Simon

In which case Mark your options are as described in my post no. 4 (substitute the year 2003 for 1999 erroneously mentioned).

Hello markshim,

Another option to consider is purchasing a dicounted OEM fan motor from Bellstar Marketing, an autofactors in Huddersfield or Best of British in the Midlands, both a lot cheaper than Xpart prices.

I went down the former route a few months ago at the suggestion of Terry of TS Autos, when my 2.5's three speed fan lost its middle speed.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

Nicholas/Zircon
