Default Parking - This doesn't seem right!

My brother has worked at the Cowley plant, man and boy since 1978.
He now is obviously employed by BMW and one of his perks is that he gets a new Company car to drive about in, every 9 months.

We were out in his latest car at the weekend.
Arriving in a car park, he pressed a button, let go of the steering wheel, and the car did it's own thing and parked itself.

It backed in neatly between two cars and was nearly as good as my parking.

All very clever, but it doesn't seem right to me!

I am with you.

Mercedes also have the self park feature.

I personally avoid using parking sensors so one of these would never be used if I had it on a car.

I prefer to develop my driving/parking skills as a driver.

It is all well and good so long as the computer controlling the auto parking doesnt have a hissy fit and the car goes on the rampage....

I love technology, but only when it comes with an on/off switch!

They are working on autonomous cars / vehicles and self park is a step in that direction. We already have automatic gearboxes, automatic head lights, adaptive cruise control, crash avoidance etc etc

For some, these advancements overcome their shortcomings, for others it is just a gimmick. Lights have now become a gimmick.

When a car can service and repair itself i'll be mightily impressed but until then ... i'll just have to do things the old fashioned way! as for the likes of 'parking aids' etc: ... I suppose it's the way things are going in the automotive industry, showering the car with gifts 'n' gadgets to make up for an otherwise dull ... dare I say it ... eurobox.

A couple of years ago Ford had a TV advert extolling the virtues of its Focus model with Active Park Assist. On the final screenshot at the end of the ad was the Ford badge, underneath which was Ford's slogan 'Go Further'

I sent an email pointing out that if I'd just parked then 'going further' wasn't really at the top of my priority list. Strangely enough I didn't receive a reply.
