Here is a starter
  • The timing belts are due to be changed every 90k or 6 yr whichever comes first. expensive item at around £500.
  • Rear sills for rot just by rear jacking points a known area to look for.
  • Rear upper suspension arms ( where the bottom of the spring sits in,) again known to rust
  • Broken springs a common problem front or rear, usually the last bit on the rear and difficult to see
  • working radiator fan ( with car running select demist in the cab and cooling fan at radiator should run continuous)
  • Thermostat water leak ( located within the V of the engine and given away by water or pink stains in the V, you will need a torch)
  • If a manual, check clutch operation should be light to operate and biting two thirds of the way up, heavy clutch or biting at the wrong point high or low could be a cost of £350 or if the flywheel is to be replaced (rare) £1000
  • Brake pipes front to rear
  • Poor handbrake

That should keep you going for a while and others may add to the list as they think of things.

I do feel that a heavy clutch is the norm on 75s . I have driven a number of them over the years and have replaced the clutch on my own with LUK parts , and have not known another car with a clutch this heavy to operate . Certainly , if there is any judder or the biting point is very low or very high then move on
If the car you are looking at feels to have a heavy clutch , then go and look at another one for comparison . If you know someone with a 75 , then ask them for a go to test the clutch feel .
Good luck in your hunt

You should have tried the clutch on my old BMW M535i - was great for developing your leg muscles! I used to hate town traffic, stop-go, continuous gear changes, even with such a powerful engine and back to front gearbox...

Having said all that, I have not had the pleasure of driving the V6. maybe just as well, I might like it too much...

Thank you all for your advise. I did not buy it as it had lots of rust. Plus could not test drive it.
