Default Rover 75 1.8 Engine and Sensor Problems

I have an M OT due in January 2021
My garage (who worked in a Rover garage previously) tell me it is not economic to repair - new engine fitted 40 K miles ago.
They say there is an engine misfire caused by anti-freeze getting into the engine and that this is a known fault with the K Series engines. Amongst what they said (which I do not really understand) that some of the sensors (including 02 sensor on exhaust control "perch?" valve) do not work and that the catalytic convertor needs replacing. They say that parts would be £400 if obtainable, and that with their labour it would make it uneconomic to repair and that it would happen again very quickly. A new engine would run £3K which would also be uneconomic and the defective sensors might not be available.
So I asked whether the purchase a different Rover 75 would be a viable proposition and they said they were all liable to suffer from the same problems particularly the 2.5 (plus suspect gearbox) and that the 2.0 diesel B M W engine was something that was now being phased out.
My wish is to keep the car as it comfortable and wood and leather - just a nice drive.
What can/should I do?

Well the first thing to do is find another garage.

Firstly i assume they are talking about Head Gasket failure on your 1.8.

They are spouting nonsense re the V6 and the Diesel as HGF is rare on these cars. As to phasing the diesels out - they are right but you could pick up a good example for small money - folk will still be in diesels for years to come.

The O2 Lambda sensors are readily available and the Cat can be sourced. You need a new head gasket - either an elastomer gasket or multi layer steel gasket depending on the liner heights. Not a massive job for a competent garage. If you did require a replacement engine a 1.8 non turbo can be got for less than £500.

As stated above i would seek another garage.
