Default Sunroof Issues

Afternoon all,

I've an issue with my Sunroof that has me stumped at present. While i was closing my sunroof yesterday i heard a sharp crack, the roof stuck in place half open and would not budge. Unfortunately I was 80 miles from home and it was starting to rain.

I've since opened up the cover to the motor and dropped the motor down to reveal a fractured drive cog. I've hopefully added a picture to this post.

I'd like to know if it is possible to replace the cog and where i could get one from. If not I expect i'll have to get a whole sunroof assembly

Hope someone can help!

Just a heads up for anyone else with this issue in the future, I got a response from another forum.

The cog is part of the motor assembly, it is not sold separately but it does appear to be common with the BMW sunroof from the 2002-2006 era, so trawling the scrappies should bear fruit! A BMW owner did just this and repaired his fractured cog!

Hi, mine did the same, the cog is part of the motor and doesn't come off separately. If you struggle to find a good 75 motor for a reasonable price, BMW 3 series from the same era are exactly the same motor and usually available on eBay, the only difference from the rover motor, quite literally, is the part number sticker!

Be sure to find the reason for the failure before fitting the new motor, the blind might have jammed due to clip failure, causing the roof to jam and the extra load to fracture the gear, this is what had happened on mine.

I'm pretty sure the BMW Mini sunroof is the same too, if that helps.

Thanks Paulifa1 and Kevin, once the roof is back in place I don't intend to open it again!

There is a great video on youtube on removing and repairing the BMW 3 series sunroof which is exactly the same as the 75 roof. He had to replace the clips that hold the sunroof in place which caused the jam. Worth a look.

I assume you are already aware that you can close your roof with an Alan key?

Not when the drive cog has shattered Polly, there's no way to turn the worm drive

It's a little while since I had mine apart, but I'm assuming it's the large nylon gear wheel that's broke.
If this is correct, yes it would not be a simple case of turning the Alan key, but if you first separate the motor from the drive gear, the key should work.
They are not all identical, but it fairly easy to separate the motor, in my case I simply opened the locking tabs and piled it out. Suitable replacements can be found on many different cars from the era, although the original circuit board would be best retained.

Just a point to be aware of regarding closing the roof with an allen key. Only do this if you know the motor is bad, as it is an emergency one time thing for the motor as it destroys the large cog in the motor by stripping off the nylon teeth!!
