Spares Availability for Rover 75
My 75 recently failed it's MOT test and although the garage stated that they could potentially revive my vehicle by replacing the rear shocks and curing a water leak, they were pessimistic and warned me that if something should break whilst they were fixing the car it would then render it dead.
I appreciate that there will be a dwindling spares market given the time that the car has been around, but what the garage has said has disturbed me to the point that I am considering disposing of the car as I don't like the thought of it living on borrowed time. I am located in the Hythe, Kent area and wondered if anyone knew of any garages that can either obtain or perhaps even manufacture spares. I am aware of a garage at Hawkinge which is nearby as I contacted them to see if they could renew the cam belts for me a couple of years ago. I would like to keep the car as I feel that it is unrivaled even by today's latest models in terms of comfort, drivability and very silent running. I would appreciate any advice. Even if there is a place somewhere that can supply most spares, I am sure that I could make my local garage aware of the source and keep the car going. I have owned the car from new and it has only done a geniune 42,000 miles. |

Hi Bob.
Mick will sort you out, stay clear of that garage they are talking rubbish, don't let them do any work on your car, sounds like if they do something wrong they want a get out of jail card.

The garage is using scare tactics. Stay away from them and use Mick. He’s helped me out countless times. A first class bloke.

There are plenty of spare parts around, new and used. Also plenty of people with or without a business premises that can sort out any problems you have.
Garages are frightened of our cars now because they don’t know what they are talking about. Simple example will be the day I spoke to an auto electrician who told me the bits I needed for my Jaguar would be expensive. What Jaguar? Kind of a backhanded compliment maybe but it just goes show to they can get it very wrong. Ironically I fixed it myself and it cost me £23 including postage!

Sounds like you have met up with another ‘OMG, what have you got one of those for’ merchants. Keep as far away as you can from them. Mickyboy will se you ok. As will others on here. Sounds like you have a nice low mileage car there. Look after it and don’t believe everything you hear about Rover 75/MGZT cars.

Dont panic about the car, I came to own mine by chance, after being put off previously for my mistaken belief there would be a lack of spares. Reading reviews about them brought me to this site, and the first time I sat in it, never mind drove it was after I handed over the money. It was even the second time I saw it in about 9 months! All because of the confidence I got from this forum. Now 5 years on, it is the longest I have held onto a car, and have no intention of moving on. I have actually pumped quite a bit more than I paid for it into it, not because it needed it, but because I want to keep it and personalise it.

MickeyBoy is a walking parts catalogue. If he can't get it then no-one can.
Edit - Just a question. What exactly would they break just by replacing the shocks? Unless they're planning to mess with parts of the car they're not authorised to touch it shouldn't be an issue?

If it failed on rear shocks then just find somewhere trustworthy and competetent to replace the rear shocks. If there's a water leak, coolant? then get a somewhere competent to replace the leaking part. Obviously this bunch of cowboys isn't the competent or trustworthy workshop you are looking for. Ignore them and move on.

I would say that the garage is performing professional risk management by making the owner aware of potential consequences of starting a job on a 14+ year old car. If a bolt or something should break, it would add time to complete the job and they should not be held responsible. The extra work could make the viability of the work and the car questionable in the owner's eyes..
Better to make the owner aware up front than to argue about liability after the event. |
