Default Motorway speed limits to be cut from 70mph to 60mph

Blimey! Looks like they're going for the full house on the motorist.

Speed limits on parts of the motorway network may be slashed to 60mph in a bid to cut air pollution.

lol, mixing it with caravans travelling at the same speed.
unless there are speed cameras as well people will continue at their current speed or close to it

As most of the motorway network has been upgraded to 'smart' motorways I forsee a huge increase in fines dished out by those average speed cameras.

I usually complain that we don't have any motorways in Northumberland. Something tells me that over the forthcoming years I'll be increasingly thankful.

On my recent trip to Peterhead I couldn't believe the number of speed cameras (with average speed cameras on all the road works whilst they built the Aberdeen bypass). I've not ventured down south for many years (I remember driving around London in the pre M25 era), must be a nightmare driving there these days.

what's wrong with speed cameras? installation should really be a waste of time and money but there are people that deliberately break the speed limit creating noise and pollution as well as sometimes making it difficult for other people to change lane. If these people wish to break the speed limit then let them take the consequences

I'd like to see the actual figures with dates/times/volumes etc. and the full chemical analysis not the political/media spin.

OK, so there's more pollutants produced at a greater speed but they are there for a shorter period of time because of the speed.

Isn't the worst place city congestion because vehicles can't get to/from where they need to go?

So what we actually need is a fit for purpose infrastructure to avoid congestion. That might be frequent, reliable, sensibly priced public transport or perhaps flexible start/finish times to avoid the "rush hour".

At times there are simply too many vehicles and not enough road space. Since the vast majority of these journeys are directly related to "business"- transporting goods or getting workers to and from work etc. - it'll be fascinating to see who has the clout - the environmental or the business interests.

Be interesting to see how this pans out.

Andy.

That is so true, where I live it can take you an hour to go 3 miles.

Currently it's even worse because the kids are off school and holiday makers are down and the weather is rubbish, so everyone takes to the roads and makes it even worse.

I hate to think what the pollution levels are but I bet they are poor.
Best to stay home.
