I wish I shared your optimism.
You only have to look back at older and now rare Rovers to see that values have not exactly skyrocketed - a 50 year old P6 averages about 5 grand in value:

https://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/p.../1968-Rover-P6

That's a long time to wait and a lot of money to spend to see it just over double its original purchase price.

... and a 30 odd year old SD1 is worth barely much over £4000:

https://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/p...1982-Rover-SD1

Of course, if people want to sink money into keeping old cars running, then that's their choice, but let's not be any under any illusion that there's sure fire money to be made as they become rarer.

Getting back to the topic, I've no doubt that the cars I have sold over the years would now be virtually worthless if still on the road, and there's probably a good reason for that.

I still like my Rover 218 VVC coupe, I'd had a 216 originally and then bought the 218. Full leather and in metallic purple. It was a late one as well on a '99 T plate.

Only sold it though to buy my first MG ZT.

Coupes were never that common but they seem even rarer now.

Another motorcycle for me.

A 1967 CB450 K0, which I sold for about £160 in the late 70s.

This is the actual bike that I owned and is currently for sale for £12,989.

Yes, but how much would you have spent to keep it in that condition

I also regret selling my 10 Year Anniversary Limited Edition Honda CB750K:-

but you can't keep them all, and Rovers etc.

Very true, Rovers never seem to be worth much, i guess they are just regarded as boring. The the cost of keeping them can easily end up more than the return , if any. There are much better cars out there to potentially make money on.

Sporty Ford's always seem to do well, so I guess a Ford puma could be a good bet. They are ridiculously cheap at the moment.

Audi tt?

Anything Jaguar, MG, or carrying a Alfa badge.

Getting back on track, I can only think of a VW 411 that I owned.

My red Triumph TR7. Reg no. NDT203R
Worn top end at 88k miles would have been relatively easy to rebuild and keep on the road. Problem was it was my everyday car and got used a great deal. Would have survived as a second car but that was unafordable in the 80's for me.

It was known as the Black Bomber!

Quite a technically advanced machine, for it's time.
Redlined at 9500rpm with torsion bars rather than valve springs.
Double overhead cams, twin vacuum carbs, electric start etc.

True, I used it all year round as my main transport and it was nowhere near the condition it is now.
It had Dunstall power exhausts and the barrels were painted black when I had it.
It looks like it has had a nut and bolt rebuild, which due to the rarity of parts, would have cost thousands.
