Default Take that DWP

Just come back from a Tribunal against the DWP, for My grandson, who was denied PIPs last year despite his Depression and mental health issues with a Nil Points assessment.

And now over a year later and after being turned down again by the DWP on the first appeal , he has now been awarded the Max points by the independant Tribunal .

And they have extended this award from the standard 3 up to 5 years before any reassessment.

My wife applied for and was offered a position as a PIP assessor, quite well paid to be honest but the onus is on marking down the claimant to obtain targets.

Quite disgusting really. One instance she was told of was of a claimant who was profoundly deaf and the assessor arranging/allowing a phone to ring for a prolonged amount of time whilst under some paperwork to see if they heard the phone.

Needless to say she turned the job down.

Don't get me wrong I believe every claim should be genuine and verified but it should always be a fair assessment and not target driven.

Congratulations on the results and for seeing it through. What a relief for you both.

2 years ago, I went to the Independent Tribunal near Heathrow with a friend to speak up on his behalf. He had lost his PIPs following a home assessment, despite suffering from an incurable condition. His illness had incapacitated him mentally and physically. Losing the PIP benefit, left him stressed out with feelings of hopelessness and basically he was in a mess.

At the hearing was the judge, a disabilities Doctor and an Occupational Therapies expert. The judge spoke up first and neither myself or my friend had to speak. The decision had already been made by the time we entered the room. The judge presented us with a typed up written statement telling us his PIPS would be reinstated, the benefits backdated and the judgement in his favour would stand for 10 years with no more reviews. It was an enormous relief. Like what Dave said, we came to the same conclusions about targets and reducing the numbers of claimants on PIP benefit.

Have a read of this to see what effect "targets" have when used in Public Services:

There's this one as well.

It would be really funny - if it wasn't true

Happy reading.

Andy.

PS When I read that a while ago (11 June 2015) I commented that HS2 might appear in an updated version. We'll see
