Lens Advice
So, on my recent holidays my everyday lens took a knock and after 6 years its finally given up on life. It would seem that the front part of the lens got knocked off the internal track, and the lens locked up. Damage has to have been done to the internal electronics as the camera also will no longer recognise it.
It was the bog standard Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 that I got with the 400D when I bought it new. Its a bit annoying as it was great for wide shots, and the next shortest lens I have is the 50mm prime. I've priced a replacement at £119, for the more up to date version with image stabilisation, however I spotted this Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 for only £20 more and am very tempted, as my other lens after the 50mm is a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 which can be very ungainly if I'm only trying to catch a photo of our toddler at a distance. Any opinions? Really its an everyday lens for a good price I'm looking for, so something fairly light & compact, and am liking the range on the Tamron, meaning I would not have to pull out the Sigma for zooming in. I never really used the 18-55mm for any arty work, switching to the 50mm or the Sigma if I wanted quality. Thoughts, advice or any alternates for same money appreciated

i use nikon not canon but the basic lens was the same focal length as yours. i swopped it for a 18-105mm and found that the extra focal length was realy helpful and phisicly it isnt any bigger.

Hi mate, if you wish to go for an all day lens you're better off with the Sigma 18-200mm OS, this outperforms the Tamron and pitched against Canons own 18-200 its only let down by the f6.3 @ 200mm.
As you have the 70-200mm range covered with a fast f2.8 lens I wouldn't bother with an 18-200mm though, I'd look at maybe the 17-85mm IS or the IS kit lens. For used lenses I buy 90% of them from MPB Photographic, the 18-55 IS is £59 from these guys and has only light signs of use. http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/use...3.5-5.6-is-14/ 17-85mm IS USM - http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/use...5.6-is-usm-10/ |
