Lights on =engine Off
Well then got into the car tonight started up as normal,Turned the Headlights on and the engine stopped.
Tried to start it and it would not start,Switched the lights off, left it about 30 seconds started up straight away again.Put the lights on and all OK Any one any ideas? It does have HID units fitted but these have been on for a number of years and never had this problem before. So anyone ?

Unusual fault with a diesel. ( It is a TD as your profile says CD ?? )
Try your battery connections to make sure they are clean and you have a good contact. Also the battery earth to the engine. About the only thing that would stop a diesel engine is a sudden loss of current to the ECU. Putting on the lights with a poor connection somewhere could do this. |

HIDs can do this, something to do with AC vs DC ballasts.
I had some fitted in the main beam and my engine cut out when I put them on sometimes... |

miIne did this using aftermarket HIDs about a month ago, I was a little worried that I was going to be stranded so just raised the revs above tickover next time I turned them on and everything was ok. It's never done it since. I do know that the initial startup on the HIDs can pull more current than conventional bulbs do but once lit they use a lot less. So I put the cutout down to the startup pulling the voltage to low for the ecu to charge the capacitors for the injector firing.
