Default Good Garage in Suffolk/Essex

Hi guys,

So for today's dose of Newbie Questions, I'd like to know if you have any garage recommendations in the Suffolk/Essex area?

I've hopefully sorted or am sorting the little niggles that I'm capable of from my previous post but today I've noticed a couple that I think I'm going to have to get sorted by someone with a bit more expertise and the correct tools.

I had two new tyres fitted today and the fitter called me over when tightening the front passenger side and showed me that when pulling on the wrench the whole wheel and hub moved back and forth by about an inch, I've done a bit of hunting and this looks like it's probably the lower control arm rear bush that's knackered. I've looked at the how-to guides but would rather pay to have this sorted as it looks like it could be a bit of a pain in the NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-.

The second problem is the in-tank fuel pump. I'd noticed when turning on the ignition that the pump sounded quite loud but didn't realise there were two. After a bit of reading up, I've concluded that there's no noise at all from the in-tank one and all the noise is from the under the bonnet pump. I don't know if the front one is running more noisily than it should but presume it's being made to work hard by not having the rear one working. Again, I could probably do this myself but if the car is going in for the bush I may as well have the pump done at the same time. I presume just running one will be alright for now, I've seen a few people saying to keep the fuel above quarter of a tank to keep the front pump happy.

Also, any advice regarding how much this could be likely to cost would be appreciated.

If you are willing to pay expert garage rates, Kerridges in Needham Market are an ex-Rover garage and excellent.

Alternatively, my local independent just up the A140 a few miles from Needham Market is very trustworthy. Old Forge Garage - it's just past the Creetings turning on your left as you go downhill and then up near the speed camera.

Give them a print-out of the how-to from this site for the pump and they will do an excellent job for a very reasonable price. They will also sort the wheel issue.

As above - Kerridges are an ex-main dealer so should be able to sort you out, but changing a suspension bush is really something any garage should be able to do.

My preferred garage is Stowupland Fast Fit - they fitted a new arm (that I supplied from DMGRS) to my ZT for £90 (labour only).

The fuel pump is an area you might need to do some more research - again changing the pump for a straight swap should be easy enough, but if you wanted to use one of the (cheaper and, depending on what you buy, better quality) inserts-only (e.g. those supplied by MKON), then there is some unusual fiddly bits to do.

I don't think any non-specialist garage (even an ex-main dealer) will have experience of this - but it's not rocket science.

In that case, I may look into doing the pump myself. Due to the huge difference in price, I presume I only need to change this bit;

The bush is easy to do as I did mine in just under an hour, so, Jack up car as high as you can get it, place axle stands under, remove wheel, take drop link off anti roll bar, remove bolt that holds wishbone onto hub and with a small chisel open up the part on the hub that holds the wishbone, this makes it easier to remove, make a note of the angle that the wishbone is at so that you can fit it back the same. Undo but don't remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the anti roll bar to the chassis these are just above the 2 x 18mm bolts that hold the bush onto the chassis, as the roll bar has been loosened it is easier to get a socket onto these two 18mm bolts, remove bolts, this now allows the wishbone to move freely. Have some water handy for the next part. Using a small brazing torch put heat onto the old bush, the water is just in case the burning gets out of hand although it did not on mine, after a short time of burning as its rubber this will come off easy. Next, Put some washing up liquid onto new bush, lift wishbone to correct angle, slide bush onto wishbone then replace the two 18mm bolts. Assembly is the reverse from dismantling. Make sure all the bolts are done up TIGHT Have fun

You make that sound a whole lot less hassle that a lot of people are saying about awkward bolts and lots of time and effort to get them undone!

Yep, the only fidderly bit is undoing the two 10mm bolts that hold the anti role bar that is above the 18mm bolts, these bolts have a long thread so wind them up as high as you can without them coming out, this allows the roll bar to be lifted high enough to get the 18mm socket in. Doing it this way also means that you will not have a problem putting the 18mm bolts back in as the wishbone is moveable.
