Default Got a rumbling or a rattle driving ?

It worth looking at the Imtermediate drive shaft ?..

I have a road speed noise starting as RR rrr rrr rrr at low speed to a rumbling like a Wheel bearing and the odd knock over rough road ( so most of the time ) ..

The support bearing is utterly shafted ... you can grab the shaft and it moved up and down and very loose ..

Definitely work a check before blaming the usual supects , wheel bearings, lower arms etc.

Popped a 2nd hand shaft into this morning, not too bad a jobbee.
Hardest bit tho' was breaking the Lower Hub ball joint , and the Tight nut on the Drive shaft .

The old support bearing .A bit worn

..
May Do a how to ..later .

The Front End has now gone quiet .. so the supposed " Wheel Brg" Rumble and the Knocking over rough roads has gone !!

Default A Short How to.. for this assembly

Not a hard job to do , No worse than doing a bottom arm, probably a bit easier ,

No Pics as I was a bit grubby and in a hurry .

This How to is to replace the Whole shaft assembly with another.
If you can figure out how the shaft is put together you could just strip it all down and replace just the bearing.

Off we go.

1 ...Wheel Off

2....Undo the Tight Hub nut.

3. Undo and remove the lower ball joint Cotter pin ( usually pretty tight.)

4..Use your preffered metthod of getting the Lower ball joint pin out ..
I used a long bar lashed to the lower arm by a length of chain.
But will knock up a special tool out of steel plate ( design of a sort of Shackle to come ) .

5. Remove the hub nut.

6..Pull the Hub Assembly outwards to get the drive shaft/Cv joint out of the hub.

7.. Get Underneath to undo the 2 bolts holding the support bearing to the engine block bracket.

8. Get ready with a Clean tray to catch some gearbox Fluid . ( in my case Auto trans Fluid)

( you may get about 1 litre come out ). Save it to pop back in later.

9. Carefully pull the shaft out of the Diff, catching the oil.

10 .Wiggle and manipulate the whole shaft assembly out .

Reassembly just all this in reverse.

NB when putting shaft assembly back in just make sure the support Bracket is in the right orientation, as you can't turn it once the shaft is in place, as it fouls other bits .

Ball joint back in , Hub nut on .. tightened till your eyes pop out , or use a torque Wrench.

Wheel on !!

Go under the bonnet and put back in the fluid you saved .

All Done
