Peeling Paintwork!!!
Gave the blue beastie a long overdue wash today and found this on the roof:
Lots of spots of cloudy lacquer all over the roof, and lacquer lifted and holed in a few places! Would I be correct in saying that a respray of the roof is the only way to fix this? I imagine its well beyond salvageable with a good buffing!

You don’t think it has been resprayed before do you?

No evidence of a respray, car came with comprehensive history.
Actually, I tell a lie there, the offside of the front bumper has been touched up (badly) at some point in it's life, very rough job. The rest of the bodywork is as it left the factory. Except for the peeling lacquer on the roof of course!

Looks like sun damage, common on cars in sunnier parts of the world.

We had a Mk II that went the same way and it was the original paintwork.
Anything to do with the move to more environmentally friendly paint? |

I've got the same on the bonnet of my Mk1. All I've managed to do so far is cut off the detached lacquer with a razor blade and apply a little touch-up lacquer to the edges to prevent it lifting any more while I save up for the re-spray.

I have seen this a few times on our cars unfortunately, a good paint shop should be able to re lacquer the roof without having to repaint the base coat.
