Coolant Leak
Hi peeps hope everyone coping in this weather although could be a lot worse (usa),,
Right i have noticed since its been cold im loosing coolant in the V not a lot ,am i right in presuming this could be the o-rings not expanding or there on there way out ? These o rings purchased from a well known member , are only approx a year old...im hoping its just the weather causing them to be slightly brittle until they warm up and then expand ?

The weather shouldnt make a difference, have a good look in the V and see if you can pinpoint where the weeping is from.

Coolant can collect in the V from leaks quite a way away. I've had it from hoses (which are more prone to the cold than the O rings) and also from a manifold gasket.

There was another post like this before Christmas. I genuinely believe that it is a symptom of the cold weather and will rectify itself in Spring.
My 2005 190 leaked into the V last winter. The o-rings were less than a year old. Instead of changing them, I kept topping up, maybe 50-100ml every week or two as I couldn't be bothered to strip the 'stat out again. By May, the leak had stopped, and all was well for months. Then in November, shortly after we'd had the first frost of the season a small top up was required again. Since then I've topped up 3 or 4 times, around 50-100ml each time. I'll wait until Spring, and see if it stops leaking again and let you know. |

If it's leaking as a result of cold weather then something is wrong. Now it might go away when things warm up and then again it might not. The one sure thing is the more it happens the less likely it is to rectify itself. Get in there with a dentists mirror and a good bright light and trace the flow of leaking coolant from the V up to its highest point. Water not only flows down hill but it also "sticks" to curved surfaces (there's a scientific term for this but I can't remember it) so an accumulation in the V could have started a fair distance away.
