Default EEkk! noise from engine bay

Rover 75 Con Se CDTi Mk1

Help chaps. Have noise and vibration from engine bay between engine and battery. When the key is rotated to the last position before starter turns engine I get a noise which can only be described as a dry bearing sound, of something rotating but is out of balance. Other than the sound everything is working as it should. The noise is at different levels if you turn off and on again. First picked it up from the cabin. I'm guessing because I first picked it up from inside the car that it is fixed to the bulkhead which would suggest between engine and battery and passenger/centre consule area.

Any thoughts would be welcome, but first one is can I drive it around until fixed?

Cheers

The fuel pumps start up to prime the system before ignition. They should stop after a while (30 sec?) The front lift pump is between battery and engine, behind the fuel filter. If you touch it while the noise is audible, it should confirm whether or not it's the source. If so, could be a symptom of failure - either of the in-tank pump or of both pumps.

Possible it is the whiney, grumbling sound from the vents? Mine has always done it from new.

Cheers dude, that looks like the baby. Shuts down like you say.

If it fails am I able to get the car started, need to know if I can wait a week as it is having an MOT then.

Cheers

If you have two pumps (under bonnet and in-tank) then you may be lucky that the in tank pump may provide enough pressure to fuel the engine. If you've got a latter-designed single-pump then when it goes kaput then your scuppered I'm afraid

Its a mk1 so I'm assuming it has two as I can hear the rear one priming. Also going to drive around with the tank topped up. Funny sometimes turning it on the noise is less. Assuming bearings are knackered.

Thanks

If the front lift-pump has actually stopped, preventing starting, then a tap on the side can sometimes spring it into life. Keeping the tank half-full may help if the in-tank pump has failed.
